Denmark Uses Antibiotic-Free Animals

March 13, 2010 11:38 AM

The "Danish Experiment" is a source of pride for that country's 17,000 farmers. Unlike industrial farms in the U.S., which use antibiotics to promote growth and prevent disease, farmers in Denmark use antibiotics sparingly -- only when animals are sick. The experiment to stop widespread use of antibiotics was launched 12 years ago, when European studies showed a link between animals who were consuming antibiotic feed every day and people developing antibiotic resistant infections from handling or eating that meat. » read more

Why are 48,000 Hospital-Stays per Year in the US Ending in Death?

March 13, 2010 11:36 AM

In the United States, two common conditions caused by hospital-acquired infections killed 48,000 people and ramped up health care costs by $8.1 billion in 2006 alone, according to a recent study. This is the largest nationally representative study of the toll taken by sepsis and pneumonia, two conditions often caused by deadly microbes, including the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA. Such infections can lead to longer hospital stays, serious complications and even death. Researchers analyzed 69 million discharge records from hospitals in 40 states and identified two conditions caused by health care-associated infections: sepsis, a potentially lethal systemic response to infection and pneumonia, an infection of the lungs and respiratory tract. » read more

Czech Republic: Trade Unions Call Off Transport Workers Strike

March 13, 2010 11:23 AM

On March 3 the Czech federation of trade unions once again called off a strike by public transport workers that was due to begin the next day. The move was a blatant gesture of support by the trade unions for the policies of the so-called Czech “government of experts” led by the political independent technocrat Jan Fischer and the country’s right-wing president Vaclav Klaus.   The strike, which had been decided weeks ago, had already been called off once. At that time the unions argued they wanted to give the government time for further consultations. In reality, the trade unions were reacting to the spread of strikes and demonstrations across Europe as workers took to the streets to protest austerity measures being introduced by a number of the continent’s governments. » read more

House Democrats Being Bribed & Coerced to Vote for the Corrupt ObamaCare Bill

March 13, 2010 11:21 AM

Remember the Senate's anti-gun ObamaCare bill that was crammed full of billions of dollar of bribes: * The Cornhusker Kickback? * $300,000,000 of bribes to Louisiana's Senator Mary Landrieu? * A new hospital in Connecticut for morally challenged Senator Chris Dodd? * Roughly ten billion in community health centers to buy off Vermont's Bernie Sanders? * An exemption of Bill Nelson's Florida constituents from the Medicare Advantage cuts applicable to everyone else? * A threat to take away Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman's committee chairmanship unless he falls into line? And, lest we forget, remember the Senate ObamaCare bill which still allows the ATF to troll a health/gun database in order to take away firearms from tens of millions of Americans? Well, that's the bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now trying to cram down the throats of conservative House Democrats, who are being told they have to pass this bill that is filled with bribes and corruption --- WITHOUT A SINGLE CHANGE. Not a single bribe will come out of the bill which Pelosi and Obama are now DEMANDING that the House pass by March 18. Sure, there will be a companion package --- dubbed "ObamaCare Helper" --- which will be "passed" by the House at the same time. But once ObamaCare is passed, what motivation do either Obama or Senate Democrats have to pass a clean-up bill for House Democratic suckers once they've gotten the trillion dollar Senate bill they want? So -- how does Pelosi get the votes for ObamaCare Helper? Answer: More bribes, threats and corruption. ACTION: Write your representative one final time. » read more

Final Health Care Bill Vote Due As Early As Next Week

March 13, 2010 11:13 AM

Nearly a year after Democrats introduced legislation to reform the health care industry - first by flirting with the prospect of having a government-run program to compete with private insurers and then floating a proposal to expand Medicare to a younger demographic - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that Congress is ready to vote on a final bill as early as next week that doesn't include either of those plans. The legislation will expand health care coverage to 31 million uninsured Americans, but it also includes a mandate requiring Americans to purchase health insurance or face a penalty. The measure does not have the support of a single Republican, and in recent days some progressive and conservative Democrats have been on the fence about whether or not they will support the legislation when it comes up for a vote. But Pelosi said she was confident she will have enough votes to ensure the bill passes. She said she hopes Congress will vote on the bill before March 21, the date President Obama leaves for his trip to Asia. » read more

GOVERNMENTAL ATROCITIES HAVE EXPLODED SINCE WW II.

March 13, 2010 11:06 AM

Down through the annuals of history, central governments have been notorious in their consistent and repeated crimes against humanity; but perhaps, at no time was their crimes more heinous than during the years of the Second World War. Since WWII, however, the severity and magnitude of governmental crimes have exploded exponentially. And, the explosions started in a monstrous way after the Japanese nation had lost its ability to wage war, and was trying to surrender on reasonable terms: It was then that US president Harry S. Truman issued his Executive Order to drop two atomic bombs on defeated Japan. Prior to the atomic attack on Japan, the US had waged a fire-bombing war, not on the Japanese military, but on innocent Japanese men, women and children, beginning with the dropping of 700,000 incendiary bombs on Tokyo. » read more

The Foreclosure Shadow Market Grows

March 13, 2010 10:45 AM

It's called the housing industry's "shadow market": those houses where the owner has defaulted on their mortgage but is in mortgage limbo because foreclosure proceedings have yet to begin. Right now, that shadow market looms large. More homeowners are falling behind on their payments but banks, lenders, and servicers are so backlogged and buried in paperwork that essentially they can't foreclose on people fast enough. As the Washington Post points out today, 5 to 7 million are eligible for foreclosure but haven't been taken back by lenders yet. The takeaway here? Despite what you've heard to the contrary, new waves of foreclosures are on the horizon, and the housing industry's quagmire—yes, it's still a quagmire—has a long way to go before getting back to even keel. » read more

How Big Business Dupes the Masses

March 13, 2010 10:44 AM

Editor’s Note: In the Great Snookering of America, millions of working- and middle-class Americans are being influenced by ads and activist groups that purport to stand with them against the tyranny of Big Government – when the money really represents Big Corporations that want carte blanche to treat these Americans like a la carte items on a menu. In this guest essay, Bill Moyers and Michael Winship describe how the not-your-grandfather’s Chamber of Commerce is helping the super-rich get even more super-rich, at the expense of the Tea Partiers and other “little” Americans: Living in these United States, there comes a point at which you throw your hands up in exasperation and despair and ask a fundamental question or two: how much excess profit does corporate America really need? How much bigger do executive salaries and bonuses have to be, how many houses or jets or artworks can be crammed into a life? After all, as billionaire movie director Steven Spielberg is reported to have said, when all is said and done, "How much better can lunch get?" But since greed is not self-governing, hardly anyone raking in the dough ever stops to say, "That's it. Enough's enough! How do we prevent it from sweeping up everything in its path, including us?" Look at the health care industry saying to hell with consumers and then hiking premiums - by as much as 39% in the case of Anthem Blue Cross in California. According to congressional investigators, over a two-year period Anthem's parent company WellPoint spent more than $27 million dollars for executive retreats at luxury resorts. And in 2008, WellPoint paid 39 of its executives more than a million dollars each. » read more

Foreclosures Are Rising: Not Just Homeowners Are Affected

March 13, 2010 10:36 AM

The financial crisis started as a housing bubble with the financial industry convinced that home values never fall. How wrong they were even a they leveraged and securitized their investments to create a global crisis.   Now, brace yourself because not only isn’t over until its over but in some respects its just begun. There will be more foreclosures this year than last and as a result more suffering for American families.   Ed Harrison who monitors this industry for a website called Credit Write Downs sees a “second wave coming”---like a new tsunami in a industry that All of Obama’s horses and all of Obama’s Men have not been able to do anything about. » read more

OBAMACIDE

March 13, 2010 10:06 AM

How does one properly describe another who would -- for purely selfish political reasons and with deliberation -- intentionally refuse a thirsty child water or a hungry child food?  More specifically, what does one call a lawmaker who would condemn to death the child survivor of a botched abortion by permitting doctors to refuse that child, once born alive, potentially life-saving medical treatment and nutrition?     A number of things come to mind.  Mr. President isn't one of them.     Based on National Journal's vote ratings -- an objectively tallied assessment of congressional voting records -- Barack Obama has properly earned the dubious distinction as the single most liberal Senator in Congress during his brief, albeit overstayed, tenure.  But a cursory review of his words, deeds and associations reveals that this ivory-towered Harvard boy is no run-of-the-mill lefty. » read more

Vitamin D Improves Insulin Sensitivity, Helps Prevent Diabetes

March 13, 2010 9:54 AM

(NaturalNews) High-dose vitamin D supplements may help increase the body's sensitivity to the blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin, thus reducing the risk of diabetes, researchers have found. Insulin resistance (or insensitivity) occurs when the body's tissues stop responding as strongly to the presence of insulin. As a consequence, the cells uptake less sugar from the bloodstream, producing the elevated glucose levels characteristic of diabetes. In the current study, conducted by researchers from Massey University and published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers randomly assigned 81 South Asian women between the ages of 23 and 68 to take either a placebo or 4,000 IU of vitamin D once per day. All participants suffered from insulin sensitivity at the start of the study, but none were taking diabetes drugs or vitamin D supplements larger than 1,000 IU per day. » read more
