July 15, 2008 LANSING -- On a day when Michigan's industrial future took a hit -- more job cuts planned for General Motors and no new Volkswagen plant for the state -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm's economic team served up 4,800 new, disparate jobs Tuesday to soften the blow. Leading the good news parade was Dow Chemical Co.'s announcement of a joint venture to manufacture plastics with a large Kuwaiti oil firm and build a global headquarters in southeast Michigan with 800 jobs -- many of them high-paying. The $11-billion new firm -- K-Dow Petrochemicals -- also had bids from Texas and Louisiana.. » read more

Losses Mount In Chinese Export Industry

April 15, 2008 Light export industries in China are continuing to face massive losses, shedding jobs and moving operations either abroad or to lower-wage regions of China. The immediate triggers of the downturn—the political and commercial consequences of the US financial crisis—are exacerbating working class discontent over low wages, pollution and poor working conditions. China’s textile industry, which exported products worth U$176 billion in 2007 and directly employs roughly 20 million workers, is facing a major slowdown. January-February 2008 production figures showed 5.7 percent growth, compared to the same period in 2007, whereas growth during 2007 was 19 percent—which was itself the slowest growth rate since 2003.. » read more

Little Sympathy for Financial Fat Cats

Bear Stearns Execs Lost Millions, But Have Plenty Sewn Up Elsewhere March 18, 2008—   As investment bank Bear Stearns collapsed, and was sold to JPMorgan Chase for a scant $240 million, its chairman James Cayne played bridge at a tournament last week in Detroit over two critical days, like Nero fiddling away as Rome burned. Cayne's decision to remain at the tournament as the company's CEO Alan Schwartz negotiated with JPMorgan Chase to sell Wall Street's fifth largest investment firm for $2 a share, 90 percent less than its value last week, has been criticized as indicative of a senior management team that was distinctly out of touch. Thousands of the company's employees whose savings were wrapped up in Bear Stearns stock options may have been ruined overnight, and a new light has been focused on the company's executives' spectacular downfall and their own investments. As for Bear Stearns' 14,000 employees, many will lose their jobs and all of them have seen the value of their stock options evaporate overnight. An average Bear Stearns employee who had $200,000 in a retirement fund now has just $2,000.. » read more
