One Day at a Time

Full of darkness, the empty house

haunts the barren fields,

with briars closing

the hot air presses down

on the bake cracked earth;

animals burrow down in their burrows,

everything descending for relief.

Why is their joy in his heart?

Why is he looking up?

His grandson snared in the falling energy,

he sees him as his spirit intended

not deceived by the brutal summer.

This should be the season of abundance

yet the only riches he knows are within,

each movement guided by an inner map,

each day according with the sacred calendar.

Some call it faith, others blind stupidity.

He knows his uncertainty

like the trails above the creek bed

but his vision does not waver

from the path forward

revealing itself one day at a time,

the crucible his inner fire,

his covenant long standing.
