Lighting My Way

Lighting my Way
The sounds of car and truck
replace the flowing river,
the wet marsh drained
and paved for metal birds.
From a nest in an electrical service
little cheeps of hatchlings
call out above the road noise
for their mother and her food.
I am uncertain in my feeding,
my care of others wavers
but my heart is rooted in something deeper,
a source of kindness no difficulty will erase,
no violence can subdue,
an inner fire lighting my way
through these days of darkness.
