Crossing the River

Crossing the River
“Uncertain of where to step
the old fox crosses the river warily.”
This the masters of old understood
yet today boldness and courage
proliferate action and determination
are confused in the masses
while those leading are encouraged to pretend.
It is winter and the deep river is frozen.
Spring begins her approach and we must cross.
The ice is no longer sure, warmth is beckoning.
Stepping on to the unsure surface is the initial faith,
then step by step, listening, listening,
we will find our way, in union
with the river, the ice and the farther shore.
