The Only Valid Knowledge

I pick my way along difficult paths,

one fading to brush as another feint track opens;

along the river, its beauty vital

then the thick forest, closing in.

I lose all bearing, searching for clues,

on and on through the density, the occasional light.

I haven’t lost the map but I can’t open it either;

etched somehow into my soul

I read location like inner braille,

touching the page with fingers of feeling,

striking a match hewn from my very bone.

There are others in the forest

but the time of joining is not here.

I have courage, persistence,

yet I forget where I am going.

The information is inside, always inside,

the only valid knowledge love.
