My fellow Virginians, earlier today I released a statement apologizing for behavior in my past that falls far short of the standard you set for me when you elected me to be your governor. I believe you deserve to hear directly from me.
However, this was not the first evidence of Northam’s racism.
In a 2013 Lieutenant Governor debate, Northam refused to shake the hand of E.W. Jackson, Northam’s black Republican opponent.
Following Northam’s statements made Friday night, the Virginia Democrat scheduled a Saturday press conference where it was widely expected he would resign.
But that’s when the story took an unbelievable turn.
After apologizing for appearing in the photo, Northam began to back-track.
The Virginia Democrat said he could not remember appearing in the photo and that the picture was possibly put on his yearbook page by mistake.
That was just the beginning of an already shocking day.
Northam then denied being the man in blackface because he could clearly remember the other time he had donned blackface.
Northam explained that he had once darkened his face with shoe polish to perform a Michael Jackson routine in a dance contest which he eventually won.
“I had the shoes. I had a glove. And I used just a little bit of shoe polish to put on my cheeks and the reason I used a very little bit because – I don’t know if anyone’s ever tried that – you cannot get shoe polish off,” Northam inexplicably told reporters. “I had always liked Michael Jackson. I actually won the contest because I had learned to do the moonwalk.”
But Northam refuses to resign.
Now Democrats – both in Virginia and nationally – are stuck with Northam during the 2020 Presidential elections.
He will be an albatross hovering over the party as long as he remains in office.
