UK police arrest 660 suspected pedophiles

British police forces have arrested nationwide 660 suspected pedophiles, Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) says.
The agency said Wednesday that the detained suspects include teachers, doctors, care workers and former police officers.
According to the NCA, 45 police forces around the UK were involved in the arrests. This came after a six-month operation that targeted people accessing indecent images of children online.
Among those arrested, almost 40 had already been convicted of sex offenses, though the rest had not been previously known to police.
Some of the suspects have already been charged with offences ranging from the possession of indecent pictures of children to serious sexual assaults, while charges against the others have not yet been finalized.
The country-wide investigation also identified over 400 children who were in the “care, custody or control” of the suspects, including 127 who were deemed to be at immediate risk of harm.
Britain has been rocked by a series of pedophile scandals in the last three years, which broke out after the death of the BBC’s former presenter, Jimmy Savile, who has been branded as one of UK’s most prolific known sexual predators.
Savile died in 2011 and following his death, hundreds of allegations of sex abuse and rape of minors became public.
Several high-profile figures have been arrested in connection with the multiple investigations into the abuse scandal surrounding the BBC’s former presenter.
