Syracuse, N.Y., bookstore owner Jon Speed urges the Batavia, N.Y., City Council to declare the city a sanctuary for the unborn (Jon Speed via Facebook)

A bookstore owner who closed his shop in protest of New York’s new late-term abortion bill urged his city council at a public meeting to opt out of the law to protect unborn babies.

“Please lead the way in upstate New York, and make Batavia a sanctuary city for the unborn,” said Jon Speed, owner of The Book Scout in Syracuse.

An estimated 150 citizens showed up at the public meeting Monday night of the Batavia, New York, City Council, reported WHAM-TV in Rochester, New York, and Speed was one of 18 citizens who spoke. The council took no action, and members are expected to discuss the issue further at their Feb. 15, meeting, the station said.

A former pastor known for his pro-life activism, Speed, citing Romans 13:4, told council members it’s their responsibility to use their authority to “support what is good while punishing what’s evil,” reported Faithwire.com

“Babies are murdered in Batavia, New York, every day that Planned Parenthood is open,” Speed said the public meeting Monday night. “Every day, abortifacients are being sold over the counter in Walmart. Babies are murdered under your jurisdiction.”

He said the fact that the killing of the unborn is legal is “irrelevant,” pointing to Nazi Germany.

“Everything that Hitler did in Germany was legal, by German law,” he said.

Speed used explicit language to make clear what state laws across the nation allow. New York’s new law, passed with applause by the State Assembly on Jan. 22, effectively allows abortion during any stage of pregnancy.

“What is the best way to kill a baby?” he asked. “Using an abortifacient? Or saline abortion — where the baby is burned alive in its mother’s womb? Or is it a surgical abortion in the second trimester when the baby is cut into pieces and then reassembled in a dish? Perhaps it is to deliver the baby in the third trimester and then stick a pair of scissors into his or her neck?

“That’s what we are talking about here,” he added, “which what is the best way to kill a baby?”

The new law allows for abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy if “the abortion is necessary to protect the patient’s life or health.” However, the 1973 Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court ruling created a broad “health” exception, stating physicians may consider “all factors — physical, emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age — relevant to the wellbeing of the patient.”

‘Day of mourning’

LifeNews.com reported Speed closed his store for “a day of mourning in New York” the day after the bill was signed.

Speed posted a sign in a store window stating: “Closed Today. This is a day of mourning in New York State. We will not collect sales tax today for a tyrannical government that murders babies. We will resume regular business tomorrow, collecting sales tax under duress. End abortion Now.”

Speed said he had a “restless night” after the bill was signed and felt he needed to act.

“I obviously can’t stop paying sales tax to the state of New York — I can’t do that altogether, although I would like to, but I can’t,” he said. “So I thought, ‘Well, I’ll put a sign up on the front window of the store and say we’re closed [Wednesday] and express our thoughts on it, just so we can make a statement.'”
