Congress, Trump Set To Ban Democrats’ Favorite Industry—Another Campaign Promise Kept?

Smaller Font Larger Font RSS 2.0

There must be a lot of politicians in Washington from both sides of the aisle who are getting nervous about this habit of President Trump of keeping campaign promises. We’ve come to expect a politician’s promise to be worthless, and treat them with derision.

It seems there’s always something that happens outside the politician’s control that made the keeping of the promise unfortunately impossible, their sincere efforts notwithstanding.

Not so with President Trump. It’s like he has a list of his promises, and his frustration is that he wants to move down the list and check completed items off while Congress moves like a glacier.

For a highly successful businessman who thrived by getting things done, not by debating them to death, the president’s job has to try his patience to no end.

We now find President Trump eager to sign into law a bill banning late-term abortions. True conservatives have to be thrilled that such legislation is making its way through Congress and might even pass, although there could be a battle in the Senate with the 60-vote filibuster rule still in force. But we now have a president who is ready to sign it, so there is reason for encouragement.

“Speaking to pro-life leader Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, President Donald Trump said it is a ‘high priority’ for him to sign a proposed bill banning abortions on babies after 20 weeks, who are capable of feeling pain.

“The ‘Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act’ will be voted on in the House on October 3, and is expected to pass. If the act can muster 60 votes in the Senate, where Republicans have a majority (52 seats), the important pro-life legislation will be codified by the president.

“The bill was blocked by Senate Democrats back in 2015.”

The pro-abortion movement has been on very shaky ground both morally and scientifically from the beginning. And in the years since abortion has been legalized, there are no discoveries or developments that legitimately serve to strengthen their cause. It’s a losing battle, and the sooner it is lost, the better.

“As noted by The Hill, the legislation is sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and would criminalize abortionists performing the procedure post 20 weeks. The women seeking the abortion will not be punished.

“‘We want to be there for the woman, and we know we need a law to protect the children,’ said Dannenfelser.

“The pro-life leader is not only optimistic that the bill will make it through the Senate and be signed by the POTUS, Dannenfelser believes the media will cover it.

“‘This will be a big issue in the 2018 Senate elections,’ she explained.”

One thing is for sure. As we’ve gotten to know President Trump better, we’ve learned that if he supports something the media will carry the story. If nothing else, he’ll ram the issue down their throats with one of his signature Tweet-storms.

Again, abortion is a morally and scientifically indefensible act. It is a stain on this country. This legislation is not a complete solution, but it would be a very important step in preserving life.
