A study by an American university shows a class of drugs which have been used to treat AIDS may be effective in stopping vision loss.
An international team, led by researchers at the University of Kentucky, recently found that a wide class of antiretroviral drugs (NRTI) can neutralize a protein pathway responsible for activating inflammatory processes in the body and thus can block age-related macular degeneration in mice.
According to the new study published in the journal, Science, the drugs used against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, can be also used against other inflammatory disorders.
An ophthalmologist in the team who led the study said researchers are planning for clinical trials in the coming months, adding that at least two to three years is needed to find out whether the drugs could be used in treating macular degeneration in people.
“With the aging of the population, it (the disease) is projected to affect 200 million people by the year 2020. It is therefore critical that we develop new and improved treatments for this disease, which is growing like an epidemic,” Dr. Jayakrishna Ambati said.
Macular degeneration, a major cause of vision loss among the elderly, is a medical condition that usually affects older adults. The disease is a progressive condition and is a leading cause of blindness in older adults.
