Beto O’Rourke Hospitalized for Mystery Illness

On Sunday, Democrat Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke announced via social media that he had contracted a mystery bacterial infection Friday and was stepping away from the campaign trail.
O’Rourke posted on Twitter, “After feeling ill on Friday, I went to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio where I was diagnosed with a bacterial infection. The extraordinary team there — from custodians to nurses and doctors — gave me excellent care and attention, including IV antibiotics and rest.”
He added in a subsequent tweet, “While my symptoms have improved, I will be resting at home in El Paso in accordance with the doctors’ recommendations. I am sorry to have had to postpone events because of this, but promise to be back on the road with you as soon as I am able.”
O’Rourke is running against incumbent two-term Gov. Greg Abbott, who is polling ahead by seven points. The Democrat previously had a failed U.S. Senate run against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and a failed presidential run, losing to Joe Biden in the primary.
During his campaign, he constantly attacked gun rights, which is sure not helping him in deep-red Texas where firearm ownership is deeply embedded in the state.
