'He was fighting for his life'

Police in California say they are looking for several suspects in a home invasion after a 22-year-old victim grabbed a gun and engaged in a gunfight to protect his younger siblings.

The man, whose name was not released, killed one of apparently four men who crashed in the front door and wounded another. Police have on video the license plate number of the van in which two suspects delivered their injured comrade to a hospital.

The dead attacker’s body was found at the home.

The attack happened near Orosi in California’s Central Valley, southeast of Fresno, according to the Fresno Bee.

Acting Sheriff Mike Boudreaux told KFSN-TV in Fresno that there were four siblings in the home. Their parents, farm workers, already had left for work before the 5:30 a.m. attack.

Boudreaux said a 22-year-old “became aware of the robbery or potential intruders when the front door of the home was breached.”

The man grabbed a gun from a safe “to protect himself and three siblings,” ages 3, 11 and 18, authorities said.

“He was fighting for his life,” the sheriff said.

The 22-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and he was hospitalized and expected to recover. His siblings were uninjured, authorities said.

The injured invader was delivered to Keweah Delta Medical Center, but no details were available immediately.

Authorities said neighbors were warned about the incident, and the children in the home at the time were moved to another location.

The Visalia Times reported Boudreaux was concerned.

“It’s scary,” he said. “We are confident there is at least someone else connected to this incident still out there.”

He noted there was no marijuana being grown at the home, because several home invasions in recent years appear to have been linked to large growing operations.

At the Bearing Arms blog, commentator Bob Owens wrote: “I don’t think that the oldest sibling in this incident could have handled the shocking situation that confronted him much better than he did. He reacted … by arming himself and protecting his siblings. I don’t think it a stretch at all to think that he very likely kept this situation from becoming another home invasion massacre.”

The Guns Save Lives blog noted the suspects at large are believed to be in a gray minivan, California plate number 7CHR190.
