PIERRE, South Dakota — Despite opposition from some gun advocates, the South Dakota House has passed a bill to allow the names of people with mentally illness to be added to a registry keeping them from obtaining firearms.
Representatives on Thursday voted 53-17 to approve the measure.
It would allow people who are committed as mentally ill and deemed a threat to themselves or others to be added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
Supporters of the bill say it includes due process, and people can regain their right to possess a firearm once they are no longer considered a threat. The National Rifle Association testified in support of the measure.
Opponents say they dislike the federal oversight required in this bill. Others disagree generally with the limits on gun access.
