The official certification of the Electoral College votes is just a week away: on January 6, the results of the 2020 presidential election become official.

But President Donald Trump’s team isn’t giving up. Though it certainly appears as if Democratic candidate Joe Biden will be inaugurated on January 20, Trump’s allies continue to fight.

And now, their latest last-ditch effort just came to the highest court in the land.

Earlier this month, the Wisconsin Supreme Court voted 4-3 to dismiss a Trump campaign lawsuit. The President’s lawyers were trying to overturn the state’s voting results.

At the time, Trump’s team cited mass voting irregularities as reason for overturning, but the state’s court refused to hear the case.

As a result, the President’s hopes currently lie with a U.S. Supreme Court plea (via Fox News):

President Trump’s legal team petitioned the US Supreme Court on Tuesday to consider its challenge of an earlier decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to dismiss its claims of irregularities in the use of absentee ballots during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Trump campaign attorney Jim Troupis said the Wisconsin court “refused to address the merits of our claim.”

He cited three Justices that did agree with the President’s claims — these agreements came in the form of written dissents in the court’s December 14 order.

If the case had been heard, the Wisconsin judges would’ve had to consider invalidating 221,000 ballots in Milwaukee and Dane counties. Biden won the state by about 20,600 votes.

The Trump campaign further asserted that Wisconsin “allowed over 50,000 illegal absentee ballots in violation of Article II of the U.S. Constitution and Wisconsin law.”

The lawsuit contained several other examples of alleged wrongdoing.

For instance, the President’s lawyers allege over 28,000 votes from people “who failed to provide identification” and about 6,000 absentee ballots that didn’t have the required information.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court decided there wasn’t enough merit or evidence to consider the case, however.

That’s why Trump’s team has filed the petition with the U.S. Supreme Court: in the hopes that they can get this battleground state to reconsider.

If it doesn’t pan out, though, it would seem Biden will in fact be inaugurated on January 20.
