KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Crews are working quickly to contain an oil disaster in a Michigan river.
More than 840,000 gallons of oil leaked into the Kalamazoo River near Battle Creek.
The slick spans about 16-miles and is covering wildlife with sludge.
Michigan's governor declared a state of emergency Tuesday after touring the area.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm says, “The last thing any of us want to see is a smaller vision of what has happened in the Gulf in our water system, in the Great Lake's waters, anywhere approaching lake Michigan.”
The Kalamazoo River flows into Lake Michigan.
The oil spilled from a pipeline, which carries nearly 200,000 barrels of oil a day from northwest Indiana to Canada.
Crews are using booms and vacuum trucks to clean the spill.
