The weather is perfect for a beach day, but the water far from it.

Red tides are causing massive fish die-offs along southwest Florida.

The water has a deep rusty color and thousands of dead fish line the shore. At some places, sea birds are picking away at what’s left behind.

According to Officials working at Florida Fish and Wildlife, North Longboat Key and Siesta Beach show the highest levels of red tide – an algae bloom producing toxic chemicals. For humans, these chemicals cause respiratory irritation, but for marine organisms and some birds, it’s often deadly.

Officials qualify this red tide as one of the worst ever seen in Florida. Birds are starting to collapse as they get incredibly sick after eating the dead fish.

Meanwhile, Mexico has hired 80 workers to remove thousands of dead fish on the shores of Matamoros, near the Texas border.
