A win for wolves

Yesterday's elections brought good news and bad news for animals.

In a big win for wolves, Michigan voters spoke loudly and clearly against Proposals 1 and 2! Voters repealed these two pro-wolf hunting measures in the first statewide vote on wolf hunting in any state since federal protections for the animals were eliminated in six states. Yesterday's lopsided wins send an unmistakable message to politicians in Michigan -- and politicians in other states that are conducting wolf hunting, trapping and hounding seasons -- that voters want wolves protected from senseless killing.

Unfortunately for bears, Question 1 appears to have fallen short in Maine. Maine is the last state in the country to allow the cruel and unsporting practices of bear baiting, hounding and trapping. Question 1 would have dramatically improved the lives of Maine's bears by banning these cruel and reckless practices. But the state of Maine colluded with the trophy hunting and trapping lobby and ran a fear-driven campaign to confuse voters. It was very difficult for our campaign to overcome this active involvement and the unprecedented intrusion by state government and its personnel in a statewide election.

It is because of advocates like you that we were able to make this progress for animals, and we'll continue to call on you for the support that's needed for these critical battles.
