Beyond the rescue

When our Animal Rescue Team writes to you, it's usually about an urgent rescue. Many of you respond to our call for help, and we are so grateful.

Did you know that urgent rescues are not all we do? Here are just a few excerpts from our May/June rescue report that I want to share with you. As you can see, there's actually much more to our work.

Enforcement and Rescue

- Fielded 840 animal fighting tips and 276 puppy mill complaints on the animal fighting and puppy mill tip lines and the online tip center; referred them to law enforcement and/or are investigating further.

- Collaborated with a local shelter on the rescue of 55 puppy mill dogs in North Carolina; provided financial assistance and personnel.

- Assisted with the rescue of 101 puppy mill dogs in Tennessee, set up and operated the temporary shelter, and coordinated the transfer of all the animals to several of our Emergency Placement Partners.

- Provided information that led to the rescue of 240 gamecocks from a suspected cockfighting operation in California; arrest warrant has been issued.

- Supplied personnel and financial assistance for the rescue and housing of 91 dogs and 12 cats from a suspected puppy mill operation in Michigan.

Ongoing Care

- Continuing to oversee the operation of the temporary shelter from the August 2013 dogfighting rescue.

- Providing financial assistance for the boarding of equine and dogs from previous animal rescues in Georgia, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Transport, Placement, and Enrichment

- Arranged placement for and/or assisted with transport of 32 rescued dogs to rescue organizations in several states, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.

Training, Disaster Preparedness, and Capacity-Building

- Trained and deployed 141 Animal Rescue Volunteers to assist at the various temporary shelters.

- Recruited a total of four new Emergency Placement Partners and Dogfighting Rescue Coalition Partners.

- Conducted trainings on animal fighting and cruelty investigation for law enforcement officers in five states and one U.S. territory, as well as aided two communities in the Midwest with establishing disaster preparedness plans.
