Protecting National Wildlife Refuges Requires More than Duct Tape

Totaling more than 150 million acres, the National Wildlife Refuge System is the world's largest system of protected areas dedicated first and foremost to wildlife conservation. Yet over 200 national wildlife refuges have existing oil and gas infrastructure including 103 refuges and four wetland management districts that have active oil and gas wells. In total there are more than 5,000 wells, with almost 1,700 of those wells actively producing oil and gas.

A New Season for Bison

A little less than a year after we helped restore wild bison to Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, the herd is welcoming its first set of calves into the fold. Just one more reason to celebrate, after a court decision was released upholding Defenders’ position that the bison of Yellowstone are indeed wild — and not subject to being forcibly removed from their homes by extremists.

We hope that there is never an oil spill in the Arctic. But if there is, we want to make sure that officials can act quickly to rescue arctic animals, like the already threatened polar bear.

Bear conflicts on private lands are dramatically reduced when electric fencing is put around things that attract bears, like chicken coops, bee hives, fruit trees and small livestock. That is why programs like our fencing incentive are so critical to conservation and recovery efforts.
