Letter from WHE [ Wild Horse Education]

At Wild Horse Education we are addressing many issues right now toward our goal of gaining protections for our wild horses and burros. Our work includes gathering data on the ground about the wild horse and burro herds. We travel to ranges throughout the West, and to roundups and BLM holding facilities. We litigate when time and resources allow; WHE has brought more concurrent wild horse litigation against BLM than has ever occurred in history. Because of our litigation we have gained important ground in areas such as public access to the wild herds on the range and in captivity, and toward halting unjustified removals and inhumane handling. We have several active cases in federal courts right now. We also help get these animals adopted once they have been captured and we have our own ongoing rescue operation.

Recently there has been a flurry of anti-wild horse statements and legal actions in a couple of states. This comes at a time when the new mining regulations have limited protective regulations, and extractive industries have more power over public land (given to them by Congress) than ever before. At the same time livestock producers are feeling threatened by Sage grouse protection plans and are feeling the effects of a third year of drought in the West.

We have gotten several requests to provide information on our work and the increased tensions on public land. This newsletter goes into depth about as many of the concerns our readers have identified as space permits
