Off the California coast, sea otters are still struggling to recover from decades of hunting.  Now the Navy says it wants a free pass to injure and kill them.

Tell Senators Feinstein and Boxer to say NO. <http://www.nrdconline.org/site/R?i=bA2cI4Z8ogvwM9NZYWNLJg>

The new defense bill (H.R. 1960) before Congress would exempt the Navy from obeying wildlife protection laws when it comes to sea otters off the Channel Islands.

If it gets its way, the Navy would be under no obligation to look out for sea otters during bombing exercises, missile firings and other dangerous activities there.

It is a license to kill sea otters.

This is not about national security. Under our federal wildlife laws, targeted exemptions are already available to the Secretary of Defense if the Navy’s ability to train is ever jeopardized. This new, blanket exemption is a blatant attempt by the Navy to shirk its responsibility to protect wildlife while training. It sets a terrible precedent for species beyond sea otters.

Please urge your Senators <http://www.nrdconline.org/site/R?i=I6eI9kYPbANVO7CaXSpySg>  to fight this terrible provision and stand up for California’s defenseless sea otters.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
