South Dakota - Zuya Wild Horse Sanctuary

As you probably already know, we were recently lost the least to the 6000 acres that 200 rescued horses ran wild and free on. The owner decided to move cattle onto the property instead of horses. We were frantically looking for a new home for the horses and at the 11th hour we were able to find 160 acres nearby that could serve as a safe place for the winter for the horses. The property owner saw what our long term plans were and offered to sell us her property for $500 an acre, $80,000 total. We desperately needed a place for the horses so we made the risky decision to take money from our hay fund to get this property immediately. We now need to replenish the hay fund in order for our horses to eat over the winter. We are asking for donations of any size to help us with this monumental goal.  We will of course be happy with any amount, but if you are one of the few supporters who can afford to give a gift of $500 (the cost of one acre of the new property), or more we will have a brass plaque engraved with your name on it and we will hang your personalized plaque on a fence post honoring you as the donor of one acre of the new Zuya Wild Horse Sanctuary.  All our future visitors will know that you came to the aid of the horses when they needed it most.

Our focus is keeping the horses safe and healthy - and looking for another big range land where they can run free. But for now they are safe.  Thank you for helping us keep them safe and healthy.

Coming next month...

We are so excited to host our first Wild Horse Boot Camp at our Sanctuary lodge for Save a Warrior on November 14th through the 17th. Jill has been hard at work preparing the lodge for

a group of veterans coming who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and are now suffering from intense Post Traumatic Stress. They are Warriors who deeply want healing and tools to cope with the debilitating effects of war experiences. The horses have proven time and again to give them hope and healing through the emotional connection made between wild horse and Warrior during our gentling boot camps. We are partnering with the Save A Warrior organization who are bringing 6 of their special veterans to participate in this program. A grant from the Green Foundation is making it possible for us to give the Warriors this opportunity. This will be the first program of many to come conducted at our Wild Horse Canyon location where we have more than 100 rescued horses living in a natural habitat in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.

Recent Rescues

At our Lancaster, California ranch, we have taken in twelve horses this year. Some were surrendered by their owners for financial hardship reasons, some were just plain abandoned to fend for themselves. We have rescued: Junior (surrendered), Willie & Waylon (abandoned), Sheena & Namaste (surrendered), Skippy & Kansas (retired from a dude string), Captain Call (surrendered), Malala (confiscated by Animal Control), Firebird (surrendered) and Twyla and Zizi (donkeys that were abandoned with very long feet).  Your continued support makes it possible for us to continue to rescue and care for these new horses and 500 others that were saved from abuse, neglect or slaughter.
