Subject: BREAKING NEWS! Legal Battles and more!

Letter from Leigh

This summer the heat was really on! We were able to do range surveys, bring roundup coverage to you and the legal effort had briefs and hearings to five different legal challenges! Three roundups that were scheduled this summer were directly related to active cases WHE has in court. Two of them were canceled and the third (a bait trap operation) created daily observation opportunity. We are awaiting hearing dates on three actions and are back in Discovery on the Triple B and Jackson Mountain case. We brought the Travel Chanel to the range and wild horses will be a premiere episode in a new series! We need your support to keep the "summer heat" on through the year. This newsletter contains some of the highlights of the cases. To all of you that have donated and shared our news a heartfelt thank you. Together we will build a road to change laws to protect our wild horses and burros from abuse, slaughter and extinction.                                             ~ Laura Leigh

Legal Highlights

First Amendment Suit Joined by Major Media Organizations!

The four year fight to gain access to wild horses and burros during capture and holding by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has been joined through Amicus briefs sent to the Ninth Circuit Court by major press organizations. This case has been a huge commitment in time and resource but we are making incredible strides to resolving this issue once and for all; the public has an undeniable "right to know!"

“The public has a right to see what happens during wild horse roundups on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Because of their remote location, the only effective way for the public to monitor BLM’s activities is through visual recordings by media representatives such as plaintiff- appellant Laura Leigh. Although the court below correctly recognized that there is a public and press right of access to such activities, it gave excessive weight to the Government’s justifications for limiting access to the horse gathers. In particular, it afforded too much discretion to the Government to decide whether observing the gathers was safe, without recognizing that journalists routinely – and critically – face far more dangerous situations on a regular basis without official interference or protection. In its holding, the court below denied meaningful public and press access to the horse roundups, while sustaining unconstitutional restrictions on such access. The lower court’s decision should be reversed.”

Sheldon Lawsuit Filed

Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge plans to remove all the horses from the refuge within a two year period. There is serious question about the safety of these horses and many have ended up in the slaufgter pipeline. READ MORE>>>

Big Media Attention Coming This Fall!

The Travel Channel is beginning a new series this fall. Wild Horses are included in the premiere line-up! Travel Channel (TC) contacted Leigh and WHE helped TC set an itinerary that included interviews with BLM, an Advisory Board member, rancher, adopters, other advocates and of course meeting wild horses “wild and free” and during capture. The Travel Channel even chose Dave Philipps to be their on camera reporter! READ HERE>>>

In September of last year investigative journalist and Pulitzer prize nominee, Dave Philipps, broke a story showing 1700 wild horses were sold by the BLM to one kill buyer, Tom Davis. Wild Horse Education assisted in the investigation after a relationship was formed with Laura Leigh and Philipps at the Stone Cabin roundup earlier that year. READ HERE>>>
