A Crisis for America's Wolves
Jamie Rappaport Calrk, Defenders of Wildlife
If you love wolves, we need you to take action immediately.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is deliberating the proposed removal of nearly all Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the lower 48 states, with the possible exception of the Mexican gray wolf. This delisting would be a conservation nightmare.
Please send an urgent message to President Obama, Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe -- demand that wolves keep the federal protection they need to ensure their recovery in the wild.
Delisting would turn wolf management decisions over to the states, and we’ve already seen what can happen when federal protections for wolves are eliminated. Montana, Wyoming and Idaho -- all states where wolves have been delisted -- have become free-fire zones. Hundreds of wolves have been gunned down or trapped, and as the recent tragic killing of eight collared Yellowstone wolves outside the boundary of the park attests, the sustainability of wolves in the Rockies is in jeopardy.
This decision could also derail wolf recovery efforts in numerous areas around the country. In places like the Pacific Northwest, and in states that possess some of the nation’s best wolf habitat, such as Colorado, Utah and California. This proposal represents yet another monumental setback for wolf recovery in the lower 48. It winds the clock back on one of the nation’s greatest endangered species success stories.
Wolves’ lives are at stake. Help send 100,000 signatures to Washington starting today.
Over the coming weeks, we’re pulling out all the stops to urge the Obama White House to step in and prevent the unwarranted killing of America’s wolves. It’s up to you and me to ensure that our children’s children will have the chance to cherish these magnificent creatures like we do today.
