Today the federal government is lifting federal endangered species protection for wolves in Wyoming. This means that wolves will soon be killed across most of the state.

Wyoming’s approved wolf management plan allows wolves to be killed anytime by almost any means, including aerial gunning, trapping, even gassing pups in their dens across most of the state.
Defenders of Wildlife's attorneys are preparing a lawsuit to prevent this plan from taking effect -- a plan which would hand over the management of wolves to Wyoming State officials who are bent on eliminating them. We may only get this one chance to prevent Wyoming’s terrible plan from happening.
More than 60 percent of Wyoming's wolves outside of Yellowstone National Park -- including pups -- could be wiped out within a year. Wolves that wander beyond the invisible border of Yellowstone National Park could be shot dead.

As a former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and as a wildlife biologist, the flaws in this decision are crystal clear. When I spoke to administration officials, I told them that there is no rational reason to strip Wyoming wolves of federal protections -- the science and recovery strategy that they are relying upon is horribly outdated and the state’s long term management plan is a race to the bottom and treats wolves like vermin across most of the state.
These are desperate times for wolves, and they call for swift, powerful action. That’s why we’ve joined forces with other environmental heavyweights, and together, we’ll take the U.S. and Fish and Wildlife Service to court. And we won’t let up until wolves in Wyoming are secure for the long term.
