ORPHANED FOALS NEED YOUR HELP!

Smaller Font Larger Font RSS 2.0

One cool morning in June in the temporary holding corrals at Fallon, Nevada, one brand new little foal laid in the dirt shivering.  Her mama gave birth to her just hours earlier but being a young confused mother, didn't bond with her baby girl.  So she left little Dee Dee all alone.  Dee Dee had no ability to survive on her own and would have starved to death with in a couple of hours without the critical first drink of Mama's milk, or human intervention.

Very quickly she was scooped up by the ranch manager and rushed to the care of Shirley Allen, the local human foal Mama who gives 'round the clock care to many of the orphaned foals found on the range, or in this case have been abandoned in corrals.  Shirley keeps the newborns in her house with her so she can give them the constant care and bottle feeding - their only hope of survival.  Once strong enough, and eating on their own, the foals get to be introduced to the outside group and start living like little horses.

Later - months later - the gentled and human-loving foals will be available for adoption.  But  now - Shirley's care is the only chance that Dee Dee has of making it that far.

DeeDee is not the first of our foals born in the temp shelter to be emergency rushed to Shirley Allen.  There have been many - some did not survive, but 3 others are thriving and growing strong.  Sassy, Ellie & Valentina.

It is expensive to care for orphaned foals.  They require bottle feeding of special diets, medications, vitamins, and other kinds of supplements.   Ellie & Valentina both contracted a very serious ailment early in their care that nearly killed them if not for the diligence of Shirley Allen who had to give extra medicine and attention to the babies.

Shirley does this out of the goodness of her heart, but there are many out of pocket expenses and foal feed and vet care is costly.  Each foal ends up needing about $100 worth of something each month.

Sassy (short for Sassafras)

Even though the need for this type of support does not seem like a "crisis" or "emergency" like saving a horse directly from a slaughter auction, it is every bit as critical.

We would lose the lives of these babies if we could not afford their nursemaid care.  Please help us keep DeeDee, Sassy, Ellie and Valentina alive and well.

Your donation of $100 will sponsor one of these babies for an entire month.

Your donation of any amount, of course, will be lifesaving.

As you can see by the column to the left, your donations are well spent.  We have saved 8 BLM horses from going to slaughter just in the last month.

We couldn't have done that without your generous and kind donations.

Please continue to give to Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue so that we can continue to rescue horses in trouble, and so we can give them the care they need after rescue and until they find their forever homes or sanctuaries.

Thank you for caring!
