Antelope Complex Roundup: Tragedy Mounts
As many as half of the horses that will be captured reside on lands that comprise the public lands portion of the Spruce Ranch, which was purchased last year by philanthropist and businesswoman Madeleine Pickens. BLM has rejected Mrs. Pickens’ cost-saving offer to house the captured horses on her private lands, thus obviating the need to ship them thousands of miles away to long-term holding facilities in the Midwest.
The BLM claims that just 427-788 wild horses can live in this vast, 1.3 million acre public lands complex. At the same time, the agency authorizes 2,400 cattle and 10,400 sheep to graze the area, which is designated as wild horse habitat.
On Saturday, photographer and wild horse advocate Laura Leigh captured the last day of freedom for this beautiful band in the Antelope Herd Management Area.
On Sunday, Laura photographed as the same band was driven into the trap.
