The “full active” removal of all wild horses from Antelope Complex in Nevada continued today. The name Antelope Complex is the combination of more than one herd management areas by the blm. As a result of journalist Laura Leigh’s lawsuit (supported by Grass Roots Horse) on the Tuscarora roundup, which the blm created by combining the Owyhee, Rock Creek and Little Humboldt herd management areas, Judge Larry Hicks ruled that the combining of herd areas was illegal. Yet it continues.
By the combining of herd management areas the blm also combines the AML’s which basically sets the amount of wild horses the blm feels can be supported by the range as they cram every manner of “multiple uses” down our throats such as mining expansion, ranching and energy development as they can. This little maneuver of theirs muddies the water even further and nets them more wild horse removals.
Laura Leigh was at the roundup today and has reported that 9 wild horses were captured today. For most of the day the pilot kept a safe distance from the horses and the day went much better. Until the last group was brought in when the contractor’s wranglers were milling about the trap site entrance, standing and creating a lot of movement causing the horses to break for freedom. 4 horses out of the last group broke free. Then the pilot went back to his old ways. He aggressively pursued the horses until Ben Noyes, the Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, said “that’s enough”. Well done Ben and thank you. Ben could see the behavior and address it. This is a very key thing to remember. This is the band of 4 horses who escaped.
The roundup took place near the Goshute side. The trap will be moved.
There was plenty of forage. It is crystal clear that the Antelope Complex wild horse removals should have been reevaluated and called off as the Clan Alpine roundup had been. Maybe the first post for today has some clues as to the “necessity” of these removals………..
