Anti-Wolf Hate Speech Inflames Greater Yellowstone
Rodger Schlickeisen, Defenders of Wildlife
The rhetoric is getting out of control. Fringe anti-wolf groups refer to wolf poachers as “wildlife patriots."1 The founder of the misleadingly named Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife suggests using adopted shelter dogs and sheep as bait to lure wolves to their deaths.2
Idaho Governor "Butch" Otter even went so far as to call elk and other wild game "livestock" -- implying there should be a right to kill wolves that are feeding on their natural prey.3
That’s why Defenders is embarking on an ambitious new initiative to seek out the voices of reason for our wolves in Greater Yellowstone and counter the escalating anti-wolf hysteria.
The vocal wolf haters even have the ear of some in Congress as several new bills have been introduced that not only threaten the future of wolves in Greater Yellowstone, but also the very foundation of the Endangered Species Act. These bills could even be considered for passage in the upcoming lame-duck session of Congress.
With your help, we won a key ruling against the flawed federal delisting of wolves. And with your support, we can continue the difficult fight to make sure that these national treasures will be around for future generations.
