With 2009 sea ice well below average, polar bear homes are literally melting away.[2] These strong swimmers are even drowning in their search for the sea ice they need to hunt and raise their young. It's so bad that some are starving to death or even resorting to cannibalism to survive.

Defenders is at the forefront in the battle to save our polar bears.
We’re fighting to stop the international trade in polar bear parts. We’re pushing the federal government to designate more than 200,000 square miles of critical habitat for these struggling bears. We’re fighting in Congress for effective legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions and provide programs to help polar bears and other wildlife survive in a warming world.
And as Safari Club International and the state of Alaska continue their efforts to strip vital federal protections for polar bears, Defenders is fighting back in court to strengthen and keep these critical protections in place -- and prevent wealthy trophy hunters from bringing polar bear rugs and other parts back into the U.S.
