March 30, 2014March 30, 2014 -- (TRN) -- *** UPDATED *** A magnitude 5.0 earthquake has struck directly inside Yellowstone National Park possibly indicating a pending eruption of the Yellowstone SUPER volcano.  As of 12:59 PM EDT, a total of seven earthquakes have now hit Yellowstone and the pattern is sequential clockwise, around the super volcano caldera!  It appears the super volcano is "unzipping!"

The earthquake took place at 8:34 AM eastern daylight time at a depth of 4.2 miles.  The USGS report is HERE.   It was preceded by a Fore-shock of magnitude 3.0 about two hours earlier, around 6:30 AM eastern US time.

Massive harmonics from the quake have been recorded throughout ALL the seismometers within Yellowstone.  Multiple after shocks are still occurring as the article is being live-updated.  as of 12:59 PM EDT, there have now been a total of SEVEN recorded earthquakes all in the same area in Yellowstone.

The mouth of the Yellowstone Super Volcano is called the "Caldera" and it is huge.  The map below from the National Park Service gives you a sense of the size of it.  Bear in mind that Yellowstone National Park is 53 MILES long and 64 MILES wide.

The 2 minute video below will give readers a sense of what it would mean if the Yellowstone SUPER Volcano erupts.

The super-volcano under Yellowstone National Park in California is an even bigger threat to the US than previously thought, scientists have found.

Researchers from the University of Utah said the volcano's magma chamber - a lake of molten rock beneath the National Park - is approximately 2.5 times bigger than earlier estimates suggested.

If the volcano were to erupt today, scientists predict that the resulting ash cloud would affect areas 1,000 miles away, leaving two thirds of the entire US uninhabitable.

The University issued a statement saying "Today's event is the largest earthquake at Yellowstone since February 22, 1980, and occurred near the center of a region of recent ground uplift described in a YVO Information Statement on February 18, 2014. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory has been tracking this uplift episode for about 7 months.

As discussed in the March 3, 2014 YVO Monthly Update, seismicity in the general region of the uplift has been elevated for several months. A previous period of uplift in this area occurred between 1996 and 2003, and it was also accompanied by elevated seismicity.

A USGS field team is in Yellowstone and will visit the area near the earthquake's epicenter today. The team will look for any surface changes that the earthquake may have caused, and for possible effects to the hydrothermal system at Norris Geyser Basin."

Water temperatures in Yellowstone today are also showing dramatic increases, which may indicate the rise of molten magma underground toward the surface.

In the Gray Lakes Tributary  a dramatic increase in water temperature, rising almost twenty degrees Fahrenheit this morning as shown in the LIVE chart below:

UPDATE 12:59 EDT

The pattern of the earthquakes is a sequential, clockwise rotation,  as shown in the USGS screen shot below.  It appears the super volcano is "unzipping" a new caldera (mouth) and could indicate a pending eruption of the super volcano.  Click image to enlarge.
