Extremely Rare Earthquake Hits Near San Antonio, Texas

An earthquake 50 miles south of San Antonio, Texas shook the area early Thursday morning. Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit at 7:24 a.m.

 

 

Earthquakes are not common in Texas, and according to the USGS, Texas -- along with several other states -- has not had an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 or greater for at least 30 years.

M-Class Flare & Associated CME Takes Off

 

Behind the western limb of the Sun, a M1.6 flare occurred earlier today, peaking at 03:25 UT. It was associated with a CME observed by the COR2 coronagraph. No geomagnetic effect is expected from this event. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be moderate to low for the next 48 hours.

 

 

Solar activity is expected to be eruptive with risks of C-class flares from sunspot region1319 and 1324. There is a probability of M-class flares from these same regions. (Movie Inside)
