Original magnitude 5.9 earthquake, reduced to 5.3, jolted an area about 140 miles off the southern Oregon coast early Thursday morning. A USGS spokesman says there was no danger of a tsunami. The quake was felt by residents in southern Oregon and northern California.
Geophysicist Rafael Abreu, says the quake occurred
in an area of the Pacific where the Juan de Fuca Plate and the Pacific Plate, also known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone, are sliding past each other in a horizontal motion.
