Late last night, two large earthquakes measuring 7.1 and 7.0 magnitude hit the Vanuatu Islands. The 7.1 hit at 16:55 UTC and 7.0 hit 1-1/2 hours later at 18:19 UTC. Tsunami warning was issued then lifted shortly after. No reports of damage at this time.
Solar activity has been moderate over the last 48 hours. There is a high probability of a geomagnetic storm over the next 24 to 48 hours due to three (3) coronal holes producing a high speed stream of charged particles Earth directed.

Tropical Storm 'Irene' is expected to become a hurricane tonight with wind speeds between 74 MPH and 110 MPH. It may strengthen after crossing the Dominican Republic on its way to Haiti.
