Earthquake scientists have discovered the tremors of what is defined as "slow quakes" can suddenly reverse direction - traveling 20 to 40 times faster than the original fault rupture occurring in preceding days.

Such events have occurred in Cascadia Subduction Zone known to produce 'mega-quakes'. The most dangerous and vulnerable area follows along the interface between the North American and Juan de Fuca tectonic plates toward Vancouver Island in Canada.

In a normal earthquake, a rupture travels along the fault at great speed, producing potentially damaging ground shaking. With slow quakes, the rupture moves more slowly along the fault breaking it. Then once it's broken and weakened an area of the fault, it can propagate back across that area much faster.
