Help Survivors of the Earthquake in Tibet

Smaller Font Larger Font RSS 2.0

On the morning of April 14, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck in a mountainous region of Tibet, western China's Qinghai province. The death toll so far is at 589, with more than 10,000 injured according to local sources. The majority of houses in the area were badly damaged. Many were made of mud and wood, and collapsed during the earthquake, trapping residents within. Schools also collapsed with children in them.

Earthquake survivors are huddling in the streets, but nighttime temperatures in the area are below freezing. Coats and blankets number among the emergency supplies needed right away. Medical care, food, and shelter are also in demand as rescue efforts continue. Aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 and sometimes stronger continue to rattle the area.
