Seismologists say they recorded a strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale in the Mexico City area Friday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 95 miles southeast of the Mexican capital at a depth of nearly 35 miles and struck around 2:24 p.m. CDT.

There were no reports of any serious damage or casualties; however, CNN reported that the shaking knocked out power in some parts of the city and sent scores of frightened people hurrying out in to the streets as a precaution.

Witnesses told CNN the shaking did not last long but was intense.

Around 10,000 people were killed in 1985 when a massive 8.1 quake rocked Mexico City.
