ORIGINAL CAPTION: A powerful earthquake struck central Italy, killing at least 90 people, causing entire blocks of buildings to collapse as residents slept inside and leaving thousands of people homeless. (Reuters) In the city of L'Aquila, near the epicentre of the quake, twisted steel supports, slabs of walls, furniture and wire fences were strewn about the streets and a grey dust carpeted pavements, cars and residents alike. (AP) In addition to L'Aquila, the town of Castelnuovo appeared hard hit, with five confirmed dead there. (Reuters / AFP / Getty) As ambulances screamed through town, firefighters aided by dogs worked feverishly to reach people trapped in fallen buildings, including a student dormitory where half a dozen university students were believed to be still inside. (EPA) During the 30-second tremor, thousands of the city's 70,000 residents ran on to the streets in panic. (Reuters) It was felt in the Italian capital, where some residents were woken by the shaking. It was also felt as far south as Naples. (Reuters / AP) The quake struck about 70 miles (110 kilometres) northeast of Rome at 3:32 a.m. local time (0132 GMT), at a depth of 6.2 miles at 3.32am local time. The epicentre was near L'Aquila, in the mountainous Abruzzo region. (AFP / Getty)
