A major 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck today near the northern coast of West Papua, Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey said. This event occurred about 4:43 a.m. (2:43 p.m. Saturday ET), about 95 miles (150 kilometers) west-northwest of Manokwari, Indonesia, and about 105 miles (170 kilometers) east-northeast of Sorong, two cities in the Indonesian province of West Papua.
 

No tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, according to the U.S.-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The quake was centered at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers).

 

The second event (7.5) occurred 3 hours later. Geographic coordinates: 0.714S, 133.245E. Magnitude: 7.5 Mw. Depth: 45 km. Universal Time (UTC): 3 Jan 2009 22:33:42.
