Two Earthquakes Hit California
Two earthquakes shook northern California early today.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
A magnitude 5.1 quake was centred 30km west of Petrolia, about 426km north of San Francisco.
It occurred at 9.26am Irish time and was 17km deep, according to the USGS National Earthquake Center.
The second quake, a 4.1 magnitude, struck about a minute later, 17 km west southwest of Fort Ross, which is about 144km from San Francisco. It was 5km deep, the centre said.
Magnitude 5 quakes are considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage, while magnitude 4 quakes are considered light and capable of moderate damage.
