Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The US Geological Survey's Hawaii Volcano Observatory has released video of the recent explosive eruption at Halema`uma`u vent on the summit of the Kilauea volcano.

The video shows the ejection of an "ash-rich mushroom cloud", which occurred at 7:28 am on Sunday morning, October 12th. The footage also shows glowing red gas particles, pulsing at the base of the cloud.

This explosion was a part of "seven hybrid seismic events" on Sunday. The largest littered the area with tephra, or "material deposited by fallout from an eruption related plume". A special weekend tephra collection revealed significant deposits of fist- to grapefruit-sized lava.

The last hybrid seismic event was on September 2nd, 2008.
