h have revised calculations for the undersea area where two tectonic plates grind against each other, increasing the risk of a destructive earthquake.

The new seismic hazard maps from the U.S. Geological Survey also shows that a fault extending south of Whidbey Island is longer than previously thought, cutting through Seattle's heavily populated northern suburbs to Woodinville and perhaps as far as North Bend. It might be the state's most dangerous fault.

The new faults provide further evidence of the high earthquake hazard in Washington State, among the highest in the nation. Western Washington and Oregon are laced with 100 or so known faults, and no one is sure how many more crisscross the region. More than 1,000 earthquakes occur in the state every year, including a magnitude-3.4 quake in Snohomish on Monday as the updated maps were released.

NASA Now Confirms Jet Stream Plays Dominate Role in Earth's climate

NASA confirms it is high winds (jet stream) driving ocean currents which plays an important role in Earth's climate and is the cause of extreme weather. Several new atlases of ocean wind patterns around the globe, based on data from NASA's QuikScat satellite, are benefiting a wide range of users, from those who sail the seas to those responsible for managing their precious resources.

Equation:

Sunspots => (charged particles) Solar Flares => Magnetic Field Shift => Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents => Extreme Weather and Human Disruption (mitch battros)

Strong winds are much more frequent on the warm side of cold-warm fronts formed where the Atlantic's warm Gulf Stream flows northward into cold ocean regions. This gives climate scientists important clues about how sharp differences in ocean surface temperatures affect the atmosphere, with warm ocean temperatures creating an unstable atmosphere that sucks strong winds down from aloft.
