But the feeling wouldn't go away, Dr. Chauncey W. Crandall reports in his new book, "Raising the Dead: A Doctor Encounters the Miraculous," and he felt compelled to return to the emergency room where the body of auto mechanic Jeff Markin rested.

Crandall already had finished up the paperwork reporting on Markin's demise and had been headed out of the room.

"Before I crossed its threshold, however, I sensed God was telling me to turn around and pray for the patient," he reports.

It was Oct. 20, 2006, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, and Crandall said he felt God telling him to give Markin one more shock with a defibrillator. He gave the order, and Markin's heart monitor immediately registered a steady heartbeat. Markin remains alive and well today.

Crandall is chief of the cardiovascular transplant program at the Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic in Palm Beach Gardens and is on staff at Good Samaritan Medical Center and Jupiter Medical Center. He has lectured nationally on topics including heart transplantation, preventive cardiology, healing and cardiology health care of the elderly.

The cardiologist's story also has been profiled by Assist News, where founder Dan Wooding reported that Crandall, a scientist, had been reluctant to respond to the urging he now describes as coming through "God's intercom."

He prayed, "Father God, I cry out for this man's soul. If he does not know You as his Lord and Savior, raise him from the dead now, in Jesus' name."

Wooding reports that Crandall held a conventional Christian faith. He kept it pretty much separate from his medical practice until 2000 when his son, Chad, developed a life-threatening illness.

Chad, then 11, a twin with his brother Christian, was diagnosed with a deadly form of leukemia, leaving Crandall crying out, "Lord, if You are real, You have to heal my son."

Crandall explored all forms of leukemia treatments and researched what the Bible says about healing, Wooding reported. He came upon the World Christian Doctor's Network and found that hundreds of physicians from 40 countries use "spiritual healing" and believe that medicine alone cannot solve all problems.

He established the Chadwick Foundation in honor of his late son.

He describes in his book how God can overcome disease and how spiritual interference comes from even innocuous-looking objects or books. He shows how prayer, praise and thanksgiving remove stress. Documenting the supernatural, he recounts a story of God's protection for the target in a modern-day stoning and the mysterious prayers that appeared on the wall of his son's hospital room.

According to Wooding, Crandall believes the Lord told him, "I've given you a platform as a physician to win the lost for Christ."
