The birth of a new religion centered on worship of a Japanese governor?

To any student of anthropology or religion looking for a PHD thesis, I strongly recommend they go to Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan and study the worship of governor Higashikokubaru. He was a popular TV personality who ran for governor of his home prefecture 2 and 1/2 years ago and attracted a media firestorm as a result. The prefecture started using his image to advertise local goods. Now, when I recently visited his image was appearing in shrines (see photo below). The forehead on a life sized portrait of him standing in front of the governor's mansion is white because people have been rubbing it in order to get good luck. If you walk through town his picture is everywhere, either on banners in front of shops or on packages of dozens if not hundreds of different products. Just like Chairman Mao badges are now used to prevent accidents and for other rituals, I see the beginning of a religion here. Now that he wants to run for Prime Minister, the cult is spreading nation wide. It is beginning to worry me.
