What are Retransmission Fees?

Under the Federal Retransmission Consent Provisions of the 1992 Cable Act, Knology—like all other cable providers—must contract with and pay broadcasters to transmit their programming to cable customers. The negotiation process, which normally occurs every three years, is the only opportunity cable providers can leverage to keep costs as low as possible. Outcomes, however, are limited: PAY MORE, OR DROP A POPULAR NETWORK.

Through the Cable Act law, the federal government grants TV broadcasters the right to deny cable operators use of their signal and programming, unless a retransmission consent agreement is signed. The law also allows TV broadcasters to stream live content online for free, while charging cable and satellite customers, who are already paying retransmission fees, to view live programming on TV.

Major broadcasters—ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC—continue to see their ad revenue decline, so they are charging higher rates for cable providers to transmit their programs. And they make big bucks off cable customers in the process.

Knology is committed to fighting unreasonably high network fees that are passed on to our valued customers. Take a look at how TV broadcasters get rich off you.
