OPEN LETTER TO THE ADJUTANT GENERAL OF WASHINGTON STATE
Kit Lange
Most people know and understand that the Governor is the commander of his state’s National Guard. What many may not know is that he has a military officer under him to actually administer those commands. This position is called the Adjutant General, and for Washington, state law sets out several pages of what are his duties. The most important one, and the one we’ll be dealing with today, is found in RCW 38.08.020, where it states that the Adjutant General is the “executive head” of the organized militia, or what we call the National Guard.
Major General Bret Daugherty is the current Adjutant General of Washington State. After graduating from his ROTC program as a Distinguished Military Graduate in June of 1980, he received his commission and served on active duty until 1990, when he went to the National Guard. He has served as the Adjutant General since 2012.
General Daugherty,
We, the People of the State of Washington, have been engaged for some time in a struggle for liberty in the face of ever-growing tyranny and control by government officials. As you may already be aware, we have appealed to the Governor twice; we hand-delivered a list of grievances to the Capitol building and to his residence, and we sent him an open letter much like this one. In both, we asked—and then demanded—that he uphold his oath to “protect and maintain” the rights of the people, for which the state Constitution calls.
Not only did the Governor ignore all of our appeals, but he also chose to ignore when federal authorities illegally arrested, detained, and interrogated a citizen of this state under the NDAA/Patriot Act for simply open carrying—a fully legal activity under both the United States Constitution and Washington State law. He ignored it when federal agents told this citizen that they did not have to honor his rights as an American, and threatened him with federal charges if he did not stop his activism for the cause of liberty. He ignored it when a federal judge, arbitrarily and after the fact, expanded the current rules to apply to the outdoor plaza where the citizen was standing, effectively admitting that the original arrest was illegal. And he has ignored the fact that the federal government has refused to return this citizen’s firearms.
We the People then appealed to the county sheriffs of this state. As the senior law enforcement officials in their respective counties, it is their duty to uphold the Constitution and defend the rights of the people. They, too, ignored our appeal.
We now come to you, and ask that you stand for liberty and uphold your own oath to the Constitution.
At some point, you may be asked to step in against us. You may be ordered to have your men arrest us, detain us, or even shoot us. We ask that you do none of these things. Instead, we ask that you remember the Constitution, and remember that We the People have unalienable rights. Remember that we have a duty to stand against tyranny and defend against all threats, including those of a domestic nature.
As the executive head of the organized militia, it is your job to stand to defend the liberty of the people of Washington State. As we speak, the rights of citizens are being actively restricted and ignored at a greater pace and with graver results than at any time in the past. If there was ever a time to act, if there was ever a time to stand for the Constitution, it is now.
If you do make the correct choice to stand for the oath that you took in service to the Constitution, then the patriots of Washington State will stand with you. If instead, you choose to do as the Governor has done, and ignore the People, then we will consider you an enemy of liberty as well. If you choose to pretend that these abuses of our rights are not occurring, then we will take that as evidence of your alliance with tyranny.
We implore you to do your duty as a free man, as an American, and as an officer. But make no mistake—regardless of your decision, ours is already made.
We will not comply.
We stand.
