Is This the Death of Free Speech
Punished for What You Believe...
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
You probably recognize that. It’s the first amendment of the Bill of Rights. It makes a promise.
It promises that you can speak your mind and believe what you like without fearing reprisal from the government.
Our government does not have the right to stymie free speech. They cannot punish you for being critical of the government or people who hold office. There is no legal consequence for being vocal about what you think.
At least, that’s how it’s supposed to be…
But recently another layer was pulled back on the IRS scandal. It is clear that speaking freely without fear of government harassment is a thing of the past...
It Was Even Worse Than We Thought
In the beginning, the IRS scandal was about conservative groups who had applied for non-profit status. The IRS delayed the application process for these groups, sometimes by as much as two years.
The list of harassments endured by those groups is ugly. The IRS:
- Demanded conservative groups provide lists of their donors
- Asked for printouts of Facebook posts associated with the group
- Asked for the groups’ reading list to review
- Asked if members had the intent to ever run for office
Just before the Super Bowl, Mr. Obama dismissed the very idea that there was corruption within the IRS. “… not even a smidgen of corruption,” he said in an interview with Bill O’Reilly.
But then the other shoe dropped.
The House Ways and Means Committee shared its findings from its investigation into the IRS.
They found that yes, the IRS had targeted and harassed conservative groups seeking recognition as a 501(c)(4). But even worse, they also found that the IRS has been systematically harassing existing conservative groups that already hold that status.
These groups were flagged for surveillance. The IRS monitored their websites. It tracked their activities. It gathered any public information on these groups that it could. Many of these groups were selected to undergo IRS audits. And of the groups targeted for auditing, 100% held conservative beliefs.
You read that right. Every single non-profit political group audited by the IRS was right-leaning or conservative.
So what gives?
In a free society, where freedom of speech is respected and upheld, how can every group singled out by the government’s most-hated bureaucratic arm fall into the same side of the political spectrum?
The answer is simple, folks. The Obama administration is using the IRS and other agencies to curb your rights. They’re intimidating and harassing those who would speak against Mr. Obama and his agenda.
It’s not the first time. And don’t make the mistake of thinking it will be the last, or that Obama will only target groups. Obama’s IRS has targeted individuals in the past.
Why Even Individual Taxpayers Aren’t Safe…
In 2011, vocal Obama critic and wealthy businessman, Wayne Allen Root, was notified that he was being audited. The grueling process lasted 18 months, but Root won in court. Five days later, he was notified that he was being audited again.
He won a second time.
But that doesn’t matter to the Obama administration and the IRS. What matters is that their message comes through loud and clear:
Challenge us, effectively dissent our agenda, and you will be punished.
Imagine, how many people will choose to be silent rather than undergo the inconvenience, expense, and indignity of an IRS audit? How many average citizens will choose not to take write-offs on their political donations for fear of becoming an IRS target? How many will forego making donations at all?
They don’t have to change what you believe. All they have to do is get you to keep quiet about it. And then they can roll out their agenda without challenge.
That’s their plan, folks.
The only way to stop it from succeeding is to continue voicing your dissent. And by taking steps to protect your privacy so that you come up on their radar as little as possible.
