Denial of vaccine injury is growing

     One of the growing problems we face as a community is the growing trend in the media and among politicians to deny that vaccine injury even exists. We haven’t arrived yet in the world Orwell warned us about where 2+2=5, but powerful forces are pushing us there.  A blatant example of this denial of reality is Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-CA-28) House Resolution 179, Recognizing the importance of vaccinations and immunizations in the United States. H. Res. 179was probably written by vaccine industry lobbyists, it simply denies vaccine injuries occur, “there is no credible evidence demonstrating that vaccines cause life-threatening or disabling diseases in healthy children or adults.” Then why do we have a National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program? Why did pediatricians and the vaccine industry demand and receive complete legal immunity from any injury caused by a vaccine? Why are Food and Drug Administration approved inserts in every vaccine package explaining the injuries the FDA admits are caused by the product? Not only is Schiff calling upon his colleagues to join in his fantasy about vaccine safety, but he also called upon the media giants earlier this year to censor online vaccine information.

     State legislators, the people who make vaccine mandates, are increasingly adopting Schiff’s version of 2+2=5. Following in the footsteps of California and Maine,  this spring New York’s legislators, under extreme pressure from Governor Andrew Cuomo, repealed our religious exemption from vaccine mandates.  In New York, I spoke to Todd Kaminsky, my own State Senator, repeatedly about vaccine safety science and policy. He heard the details of my son’s vaccine injury, and the fact that half a dozen physicians, several of whom practice in his own district, all told my wife and I never to give my son another vaccine. All Kaminsky could do was deny that we were telling him the truth, and repeated like a mantra, “I talked to the experts. Vaccines are safe!” Safe for everybody? Hundreds of parent advocates had a similar experience with many of his colleagues.

     Not all legislators are as closed minded as State Senator Kaminsky. But unless we are actively engaged in educating them on an ongoing basis the denialists will prevail. Get to know your state legislators. Go to their public meetings, visit their offices with a group of like-minded friends and neighbors. Make sure they hear the truth. 2+2 does not equal 5.
