Telephone -Wielding Grandmother Chases Off Man With Taser

A Speake grandmother turned her telephone on an intruder Saturday night, and the hooded man got the message in a hurry.

Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said the telephone proved more powerful a weapon than the intruder’s Taser.

Mitchell would release few details because, he said Sunday, he didn’t want to compromise the continuing investigation.

“It was a forced entry,” he said. “About 8 p.m., the woman noticed the porch light wasn’t working, and she opened the door to step outside and see why it wasn’t on. That’s when the man forced his way in.”

Mitchell said during an altercation, the man attempted to use the Taser and, in fact, may have used it.

“She thinks she was hit,” Mitchell said. “Why it didn’t put her down, we don’t know. Then she used the telephone as a weapon and fought back. The man ran off.”

Nobody appeared to be seriously injured, he said.

Mitchell said several similar incidents have occurred in the area during the past few months.

“It appears that grandmas are getting tired of being pushed around,” he said.

“This woman and her granddaughter were alone at the house, and they were scared. But like some of the others, she just wasn’t going to put up with it.”

Mitchell said officers relocated them for the time being.

“We’re not ready to identify the grandmother,” he said, “and the granddaughter is a juvenile. We’re also not releasing any more information about the intruder.”
